Employer perspectives on their supportive role in promoting sustainable RTW of disabled workers

Abstract Background Employers play an important supportive role in facilitating sustainable Return to Work (RTW) of workers with disabilities. Little is understood about how employers deal their role, what kind support they offer and which facilitators employer are successful RTW. Methods A semi-structured interview study was conducted among 27 representatives (e.g. supervisors, HR managers, case managers) companies the Netherlands who had experience retaining at least one disabled within company. Participants were included through purposive sampling on sector company size. Data analyzed by means thematic analysis. Results We identified three different types support: 1. instrumental (offering work accommodations), 2. emotional (encouragement, empathy, understanding) 3. informational (providing information, setting boundaries). Facilitators categorized into main themes: good collaboration, subthemes (in)formal contact, trustful relationships, mutual responsibilities networks, characteristics, including organizational culture, leadership skills flexibility, employee characteristics flexibility resilience. Conclusions Different considered as RTW process workers. Besides offering accommodations, also necessary. In addition, collaboration both may be viewed for optimizing supervisor interaction during process. Key messages Instrumental, Facilitating factors include leadership.
